Penelope
By Sally Kirkland Snider

Penelope is a song cycle by composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, with lyrics by playwright Ellen McLaughlin featuring vocalist Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and the chamber orchestra Signal, conducted by Brad Lubman. Inspired by Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, Penelope is a meditation on memory, identity, and what it means to come home. Suspended somewhere between art song, indie rock, and chamber folk, the music of Penelope moves organically from moments of elegiac strings-and-harp reflection to dusky post-rock textures with drums, guitars and electronics, all directed by a strong sense of melody and a craftsman's approach to songwriting.

Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto
By James Ehnes

His brand-new release is a live recording of the Violin Concerto in e minor and the Octet, two pieces by Felix Mendelssohn, a composer Ehnes highly admires. "The two pieces are from opposite ends of his artistic life, but they are so quintessentially who he was as a composer," Ehnes said, "It's like once he found his voice, that voice was perfect. I know there has been criticism of Mendelssohn, of him not finding his voice, and I think that's just crazy. If you're already perfect at being Mendelssohn, why would you want to change that?"

The Preludes & Fugues
By Alexander Melnikov

In 1950, Shostakovich went to Leipzig to attend the Bicentennial Bach competition. His admiration for Tatiana Nikolaeva's performance of the Well-Tempered Clavier served as an impetus to write his own set of Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues, loosely modeled on Bach's. Over the years, Nikolaeva, who performed the composition frequently throughout her career, became practically synonymous with the work. Alexander Melnikov started from scratch and came up with his own, unique and eminently musical interpretation. The third disc in the set is a DualDisc with a DVD side featuring a short film by Christian Leblé about the Preludes & Fugues that includes interviews with Alexander Melnikov and Andreas Staier.

Three Tenors Christmas
By: Placido Domingo

It's improbable that anyone even mildly interested in music would be unfamiliar with the phenomenon that is the Three Tenors — the veteran singers Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and José Carreras assembled a crowd-pleasing program combining classical arias and popular songs to celebrate the 1990 World Cup in Rome and subsequently parlayed the spectacular success of the event into a series of enormously popular CDs and concert appearances.

The Tenors, here in conjunction with Steven Mercurio and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, apply their tried-and-true formula to a holiday format — the selections offered are from a Christmas concert in Vienna in December of 1999 and again feature a variety of classical favorites and popular and traditional songs and carols along with a few surprises such as "Feliz Navidad," " Amazing Grace," and "Happy Christmas/War is Over" by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The trio brings its usual energy and enthusiasm to bear on the proceedings, creating an atmosphere of high spirits and conviviality.
See all recommended Placido Domingo releases.

A String Quartet Christmas
By various artists

If ever a season called for music in the home, it is Christmas. In the days before recordings, members of the household, invariably proficient on one instrument or another, would play music together - both for their own enjoyment and to set a festive mood. The arrangements in this audiophile set from Arturo Delmoni, meticulously produced by John Marks, hearken back to those earlier days. And in that tradition of music-making, the modern household may well be inspired to sing along.

"A first-class string quartet plays tasteful arrangements — in refreshingly un-gimmicky style. Warmly recommended for those who like the tunes better than the words." — The Washington Post

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 4,5 & 6
By Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra

"The recordings by Evgeny Mravinsky and his Leningrad Philharmonic, taped in the autumn of 1960 in London while on tour, are among the absolute classics of the catalog. They are readings of the utmost intensity; no one else has had the nerve, or ability, to play the music this way. The treatment is very Russian: the passions more feverish, the melancholy darker, the climaxes louder." — Ted Libbey

Jack Gallagher: Orchestral Music
By London Symphony Orchestra

Sometimes the most surprising things come from the most unexpected places. Who could have predicted that one of the greatest rock bands of all time would come from Liverpool, England? Here's another one for you. The composer responsible for the exciting orchestral music on this new release isn't from Los Angeles or New York — he hails from a smaller city in Ohio. American conductor JoAnn Falletta unearthed four orchestral works by Jack Gallagher and recently recorded them with the London Symphony Orchestra.
